Installation
A lock is only as good as how it's installed. A strong deadbolt with a short bolt, a loose strike plate, or screws that only reach the trim won't stand up to a kick. When we install a lock, we make sure the bolt fully extends, the strike lines up, and the door closes and latches cleanly.
- Deadbolts, single and double cylinder.
- Keypad and smart locks, including models that work with phone apps. We can install hardware you've already bought or help you pick one that fits your door.
- Knobs, levers and handle sets for entry, passage and privacy doors.
- Reinforced strike plates and longer screws on exterior doors.
- Gate, storm door and sliding door locks.
- Commercial hardware such as grade-rated levers, closers and exit devices. See commercial locksmith.
Repair
Most lock problems start small: a key that's hard to turn, a bolt that has to be pushed, a latch that misses the strike when the weather changes. Caught early, these are usually simple fixes, like lubricating or servicing the cylinder, adjusting the strike plate, or replacing a worn part. Left alone, they're how people end up locked out or with a door that won't lock at all.
Picking hardware that fits your door
Before you buy, it helps to know your door's backset (how far the hole is from the edge, usually 2-3/8" or 2-3/4"), the door thickness, and whether you want the new lock to use the same key as your others. Call us before you buy and we'll help you choose something that fits. If you want it keyed to your existing key, we can rekey the new lock during installation.
Smart locks: what to expect
Keypad and smart locks are great for families, rentals and anyone who loses keys. They do run on batteries, so pick a model with a low-battery warning and a backup way in, either a key cylinder or an external battery contact. We can walk you through the setup after installation.
Frequently asked questions
Can you install a lock I already bought?
Yes. We install customer-supplied hardware too, including smart and keypad locks. If it doesn't fit your door, we'll tell you before we start.
Can my new lock use the same key as my other doors?
If it uses a compatible keyway, we can usually rekey it to match your existing key during installation.
My door doesn't latch unless I slam it. Can you fix that?
Usually. It's often a strike plate or hinge alignment problem, not a bad lock. We'll adjust it so the door latches and locks properly.
Do you install locks for businesses?
Yes. We install commercial-grade hardware, including levers, door closers and exit devices. See our commercial locksmith page.
